Who Gets into Your World
Bible Reading: Philippians 2:5-11
[Christ Jesus] took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. Philippians 2:7
LUCAS WENT BONKERS when his favorite uncle came to visit. As soon as Uncle Miguel was in the door, he was on the floor with Lucas designing Lego skyscrapers. Uncle Miguel knew how to give superheroes even more super powers. Uncle Miguel could even make cool army guy noises and car noises and all sorts of other interesting noises. And Uncle Miguel never got tired of playing with Lucas.
Little kids need adults who ditch the world of jobs and responsibilities and enter the tiny-tyke world of toys, games, and pretend.
You’re no little kid. But even adolescents need attention. You still need adults to get into your world and care about your activities and interests. And your requirement for attention is met when a loving adult leaves the grown-up world for a period of time and gets into your world.
A family in which you get that kind of attention showered on you might seem like a different planet from where you’ve grown up. If you haven’t received attention from the adults around you, perhaps you wonder how you can matter to God or to others. You might see yourself as less than first quality because significant people in your life didn’t care enough to spend time with you.
Let your heart grab hold of this fact: God left his world-heaven-in the person of Jesus Christ and entered your world-sinful earth-to demonstrate that you are the object of his love. That’s the message of Philippians 2:5-8. God is the one who meets your ache for attention.
Besides that, God is still looking after you. He values you so highly that he sticks around in your world day by day in the person of the Holy Spirit (see John 14:16; Matthew 28:20). He has known every detail about you since before you were born (see Psalm 139:13-16). He knows all about your everyday hassles, inviting you to “give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you” (1 Peter 5:7). He couldn’t be closer to you moment-by-moment, because he’s right here with you. He’s so close that one of Christ’s names is ” ‘Immanuel’ -which means ‘God is with us’” (Matthew 1:23).
As you let this truth flood your mind and heart, you’ll be awash in a new view of you. You’ll begin to see yourself as you really are: a person of infinite value and worth.
REFLECT: How has Jesus showered incredible attention on you? What does that say about how much he loves you?
PRAY: Ask God for his help in seeing yourself as he sees you.
