WANT TO KNOW the secret of the world’s best sex?
The Bible points out that a husband and wife become “one flesh” (Genesis 2:24, NIV). And here’s the secret: The best sex comes in marriage-and after a deep, spiritual relationship has been established.
Sex can affect you in almost the same way knowing God does. God knows you all the way to your innermost being-and he loves you in spite of your faults. Having sex with someone means you reveal yourself at a truly deep level-and not just physically. Sex makes you both more humble and more secure, because you realize your husband or wife loves you in spite of any faults he or she finds in you. And the closer a husband and wife grow spiritually, the more they enjoy their sex life. God blesses sex in a spiritual way and uses it to build up a married couple emotionally.
See it? You get to expect more from sex than the physical. Humans aren’t like animals. Ever noticed a female dog in heat and the male dogs around her? It is obvious that the sexual behavior of dogs is purely animal instinct.
For humans, sex involves your mind-your ability to choose. And because your mind and spirit are constantly involved-as are your emotions-sex is always very personal. The relationship between a man and woman is never the same as it was before they had sex. After having sex and then breaking up, many people confess that they feel like they left a part of their self with another person. And they really did. That’s what the Bible means when it says that through sex a man and woman become “one flesh.”
Someday, when the time comes to give yourself to your husband or wife, that person will know something about you he or she can never forget. And you will know him or her the same way. In fact, that word “know” is the word some translations of the Bible use to describe the sex act, as in Genesis 4: 1: “Adam knew his wife” (KJV). Did you know that?
God made sex to be a way a husband and wife say something incredibly special to each other. Every time a married couple shares sex together, they celebrate the vows they made on their wedding day and the oneness they have on all levels-spiritually, mentally, and emotionally as well as physically. As you walk close with Jesus and he leads you in his time to the person with whom you will share all of yourself, you will be able to have every bit of this and even more.
REFLECT: What kind of oneness does sex celebrate?
PRAY: Thank God for his awesome plan for sex.
